Palm Sunday falls on the Sunday before Easter.
It commemorates Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
Its name comes from the palm branches people waved to greet and honor Jesus Christ as he entered the city.
It is the first day of Holy Week.
In Christian rites this day is celebrated by blessing and distribution of palm branches.
In the countries where palms do not grow the branches of native trees, as boxwood, olive, willow or yew are used instead.
WORDS
to commemorate: to remember officially, to show respect to.
rite: a traditional ceremony.
